History of Cathedral Metropolitana and Giant Tree Figueira - Madi Ford

Cathedral Metroplitana

The Cathedral Metroplitana is a cathedral in the center of Floripa. It was the first church on the

island and was built in 1673 in honor of Nossa Senhora do Desterro (translation: Our Lady of

Exile- A catholic title for the Virgin Mary).

On September 25, 1747 the Governor asked for permission to add a matrix. The request was

granted and construction for that was 1753-1773. In 1908 it was considered a Cathedral church.

Modifications to the building were made in 1922 to commemorate Brazil’s 100 years of

independence.

Giant tree figueira

The giant tree figueria is a 140 year old fig tree. It was originally in a big park in front of the

cathedral, and was transferred to its current location (XV de November Square (15 th November

square)) in 1891.

There is a belief that if you walk around the tree several times you will gain luck in marriage and

a richness.
