Trip cost

Okay, let's get down to the nitty gritty.  How much is this trip going to cost??

Well, that depends.  The trip is listed by the Office of Learning Abroad as costing $1520.50.  However, there are a few caveats to that.

Numero Um.  The more students we get to come, the less the cost will be that you have to actually pay.  There are certain fixed costs to the trip, and the more students who are paying for those, the less the trip is for each individual student.  Right now, the trip costs are based on ten students coming.  If we have less than ten students sign up, it is doubtful - although not impossible - that we will be able to go.  For every students over ten that goes, however, the cost goes down.  The maximum number of students that can sign up is twenty.  If we have twenty students, the cost will go down for each student by a few hundred dollars.

Okay the Study Abroad office says that this is incorrect information.  I am not allowed to decrease the cost of the trip, even if more than ten students sign up.  I feel like there are going to be ways to get around this.  Like if we end up having extra funds, we can take everyone out to some meals or something.  Study Abroad office says that any extra funds that are leftover after the trip get donated to their office to cover other trips - and I don't want to do that, no offense Study Abroad office.  Do not tell them I said this.

Numero Dois.  The costs do not cover everything.  Most significantly, you are responsible for finding and paying for your own airfare which is not included in the cost of the trip.  The flight will be to and out of the international airport in Florianopolis, Brazil.  Right not, if you search Google Flights for a flight out of Las Vegas on May 2 and returning on May 11, it looks like it's anywhere from $900-$950.  I am thinking that this will go down.  If you are willing to take the long way and spend a couple days getting there and coming back, you may be able to find a flight on Kayak or FlightHub for $500-$600.  Our family with three kids in tow is going to Brazil this Christmas and we booked cheap flights that take 47 hours to get there and back.  It includes a 21-hour layover in New York City, so we are planning to get a hotel room and get some sleep.

Numero Tres.  There are some other costs which are not included.  You will need to pay for an Uber to get yourself to and from the airport in Florianopolis to our Airbnb, which is about ten miles away.  Ubers are not very expensive there, I am guessing it may cost you around $5.  You are also responsible for most of your meals while there.  Again, food is not as expensive there as here.  We will have Wifi in the Airbnb but if you want to use your phone while out and about, there will be a charge from your cell phone carrier.  We had to pay $10/day/phone while there.

Numero Quatro.  Please notice my use of Portuguese in this post.  I am trying very hard to learn.
